Hiland Dairy Recalls Chocolate Milk Over Contamination Concerns

Contaminated milk from Hiland Dairy was sent to more than a dozen Oklahoma City metro schools and at least one hospital.

Twenty-eight kids are being monitored by Oklahoma Children’s Hospital after drinking the recalled milk at SSM Health Saint Anthony Hospital.

Hiland Dairy said only eight cases of the milk were contaminated, but it’s recalling all 4,800 of them to be safe.

The company issued the recall for the Half-Pint 1% Low Fat Chocolate Milk Cartons after a contact surface cleaner called Synergex was found inside.

Doctors said it can cause mouth sores, ulcers, and stomach problems if consumed.

“Those symptoms can vary,” said Dr. Adnan Altaf at OU Children’s Hospital. “But they could have heartburn or chest pain or abdominal pain. They could have vomiting.”

The FDA said parents need to look for a January 27th sell-by date and the plant code 40-25.

Oklahoma City Schools and other districts are throwing out the milk and working with parents to make sure kids don’t drink it.

One Edmond mom said she found one of the cartons in her fridge.

“I got to my refrigerator and check the chocolate milks,” said Julie Partin. “I read the numbers probably 10 times. I say to my husband ‘you won’t believe this! This milk is sitting here like a ticking time bomb!”
