The pandemic has made the challenge of operating out of the shopping mall even harder. Until recently, Penn Square Mall seemed to buck a national trend.

It thrived when other malls were closing their doors.

“OKC has benefitted for many years from being a regional hub for shopping,” said Oklahoma City Budget Director Doug Dowling, who also serves as the assistant finance director.

The one million plus square foot mall is still a top destination for those shopping in-person.

Dowling reminds us that OKC city operations are funded by sales tax revenue being generated in places like malls.

But Penn Square Mall has been losing well known tenants.

Jeweler BC Clark has moved to Classen Curve.

William Sonoma has been closed for months.

Abercrombie and Fitch and Hollister are gone.

And January 24 will be the last day for well-known stalwart Banana Republic.
