The Super Bowl coming up this Sunday will air right here on News 9. A lot of changes this year, but the fans in the metro are as excited as ever.
The Buffalo Wild Wings on Interstate 40 in Oklahoma City is 361 miles from Arrowhead Stadium. But on game day, The Chiefs Kingdom Oklahoma Group could not be more passionate even if they were there on the 50-yard line.
“We started about eight years ago,” said the group’s founder who goes by Papa Chief.
He was, once a season ticket holder when he lived in Kansas City. Now nearly 200 members strong, fans across the state meet at various Buffalo Wild Wings on game days.
“It’s way more fun than just sitting at home watching it on TV by yourself,” said member Dustin Eisenhower.
Two tables away, on the day of the conference championships, are a bit more subdued and rarer sighting in Oklahoma: a family of Tampa Bay fans.
“You don’t see many of us,” laughed Denise Boyer.
They've waited a while for this. The last time the Bucs were in the Super Bowl was 2003.
“I feel awesome, they are going to the Super Bowl! Go Bucs!” she shouted.
The Chiefs fans we talked to however, were rooting for Green Bay not Tampa Bay.
“We were hoping for a repeat of Super Bowl Number 1. But we get Brady again, in their hometown.”
A repeat of last year's Championship, of course is the real goal and these Chiefs fans will welcome anyone into the kingdom who wants to cheer along with them.
“We got a lot of new fans, we’re happy to have ya,” said Papa Chief.
