Offensive linemen don't get enough credit, unless you're Lane Johnson. The Super Bowl champion, 3-time Pro Bowler and former Sooner had to work hard for everything he has, starting back in high school when he played quarterback.

After spending a year in junior college, Lane pushed for a scholarship at OU almost going to TCU.

“We called Coach Bob up and said, ‘Hey we’re about to go there if this doesn’t happen’,” Johnson told News 9’s Dusty Dvoracek. “They had a scholarship available and they were like this guy looks big and athletic we’ll try him out.”

Lane played defensive end and tight end before finding his home on the O-Line.

“I remember the next practice I was running routes, then I found myself in the pass-rush drill and was here ever since,” he said.

Lane was the No. 4 pick in the NFL draft and has been with the Philadelphia Eagles even since. In 2017 Johnson said he thought the team was something special.

“After we beat the chargers there was like this ‘OK, we can do this. We can be special,” Johnson said.

And they were special. The Eagles went to Super Bowl 52 to face Tom Brady and the Patriots. It was a close game in the 4th quarter. In the final seconds #12 had the ball.

“They got the ball back and tried the hail Mary and fortunately they don’t catch that,” Johnson recalled. “I sat on the bench for ten, fifteen seconds, once everything erupts, I just watch everyone going crazy,”

Lane calls Oklahoma home in the offseason. He is currently rehabbing an injury while enjoying time with his buddies.

“We don’t talk about football, but we do everything else, fish, hunt just relax. (They) keep you grounded and where you need to be,” he said.

While the 9-year veteran wants more Super Bowl rings, he still appreciates everything that happened here in Oklahoma.

“It’s crazy how it all worked out. I had great coaches here, great people here in Oklahoma,” Johnson said.
