Vernon AME Church Given Out More Than 300,000 Meals Over Past Year

The Vernon AME Church in Greenwood is marking one year of its food giveaway program.

"We hope it ministers to folks' souls. Not just feeding their mouths but letting them know that someone cares and whenever we're in need that we're a place they can come to for help,” Kristyn Paschal with the Vernon AME Church.

Workers with the God Provides Feeding Ministry hold daily events where they hand out groceries or provide hot meals. Thursday, they marked the occasion by doing both.

"We need to help people. People need help and we need to feed people. And I think it's making a big, big difference here,” James Nash said.

The church relies on donations and community partners to keep the program going.

Over the last year, Vernon AME has given out more than 300,000 meals.
