Tulsa’s drive in movie theater is celebrating 70 years in business this year.
Friday is the opening of the 2021 season for the Admiral Drive-In.
Because of the pandemic, Admiral Twin is only showing one movie per screen each night. They hope by May to change that and begin showing double features again.
“If you couldn’t get out of town, you can come out here. You don’t have to come into the concession stand. You can just stay in your car and feel safe. We’re kind of the natural social distancing entertainment place," said Blake Smith.
Smith is the owner and the Admiral Twin has been in his family for more than 30 years.
This year the drive-in celebrates it’s 70th anniversary.
“I don’t know; it’s just a fun place. I think it’s kind of an icon of Tulsa, and we’ve been here for so long," said Smith.
If it's been more than a year since you've been to the drive-in, you can expect some changes.
“We will have our concession stand open, but we don’t have a lot of kitchen items because that causes congregating. So, those are kind of the changes; we ask people to wear masks when they are away from their car or inside the building," said Smith.
He said last year was a busy year for the drive-in, and they're hoping to see more families enjoying the big screens again this year.
“The kids want to watch the movie and you want to do something else, this is the perfect place to be," said Smith.
You can buy your tickets ahead of time online or wait and buy them in person. Smith recommends getting there about 45 minutes before the start of the movie. Wonder Woman 1984 starts at 7:45 and Tom & Jerry at 8.
