For some, getting your stimulus check is easy, all you need to do is file your taxes. But what happens when you don’t file or don't have an address to file?
The Homeless Alliance of Oklahoma City said they are trained to handle that situation.
“We have about 12 staff who are trained through the Vita program, which is a program of the IRS, in helping people file their state and federal income taxes. We are processing those returns to help people get their stimulus payments,” said Meghan Mueller, the Associate Executive Director at the Homeless Alliance.
Those that would like help getting their stimulus payment can go to the Homeless Alliance day shelter near Northwest 4th Street and Virginia Avenue; all you need is one form of ID.
“Most of the folks that we are seeing daily it is for more basic needs like food, shelter, showers, things like that,” said Mueller. “Being able to provide assistance for people who may have just given up on getting a stimulus payment it’s really just the icing on the cake.”
The Homeless Alliance started processing returns a week and a half ago and have already processed over 35 returns which comes out to nearly $30,000.
“A stimulus could easily help pay someone’s deposit getting a new place, it is a really powerful experience,” said Mueller.
The day shelter is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
