The Oklahoma County government approved of the sheriff’s department working with Good Caper Content, a production company with offices in New York and California, on a new true-crime show.

“This isn’t COPS, this isn’t Live PD,” Sheriff Tommie Johnson said to the county commission Monday. “This is us working together with our community, building these relationships and finding ways to keep our communities safe together.”

The commission eventually voted 2-1 to approve the contract with GCC. Carrie Blumert of district one was the sole vote against the partnership.

“I just have concerns with filming people while they’re being arrested or filming people while they’re interacting with law enforcement for the sake of a production or the sake of entertainment,” Blumert said after the meeting.

The contract did not include a title of the program, which she said makes it hard to know what its ultimate message will be.

“This contract just seemed pretty open-ended,” she said.

After production starts, Good Caper Content will make a pilot episode to pitch the series to networks, streaming services and other distributors.

The department will not receive compensation for the production, according to the contract.

The department can request changes “to verify the factual accuracy” of each episode. Producers will, though, “have the absolute discretion to determine the editorial content of the series and each episode thereof including, but not limited to, tone, theme, featured events and story line,” according to the contract.

Good Caper Content did not respond to News 9’s request for comment Monday.

OCSO spokesperson Aaron Brilbeck said the company contacted the department under former Sheriff PD Taylor about the project, which was ultimately upended by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“They had a pretty good working relationship with PD Taylor’s administration prior to approaching us. And it felt right for them, and it feels right for us,” he said. “The way they pitched it to us, they want to focus more on the community.”

Brilbeck said the department and company are negotiating a production schedule.
