Daniel Perez said his mom would do anything for anyone, especially her kids.
"Were we not doing enough for him? Did we not pay attention? Did we miss something?" Perez asked.
Perez is wrestling with the thought of how his own brother, Andy Perez, could be capable of beating their mother, Lizbeth Campos, with a hammer and holding her hostage for three days.
An affidavit said the Perez boys' mom has several skull fractures, two broken eye sockets and a jaw broken in several places.
Perez said when he saw his mom for the first time in the hospital, she looked unrecognizable.
"In my head, I was like, ‘Who's this lady?’ I realized: That's my mom,” Perez said.
Perez said she still needs help eating. When she speaks, she is harder to understand.
"Out of everything she says, ‘I love you,’ is the most clear to me,” Perez said.
The affidavit said Campos wrote her Andy notes asking to leave, asking for food and saying she was in pain.
Tulsa police said Andy refused to let Campos leave or receive medical treatment. Instead, he told her to stop crying and yelling because, he said, that’s what was the source of the pain in her mouth.
"He's still going to be my brother, no matter what,” Perez said. “It's going to be hard to forgive him, but there's time for that.”
Police said Campos escaped to a neighbor's house nearby where she called 911.
"For her to survive something like this is basically a miracle," Perez said.
Perez’s wife, Cheyenne, said her mother-in-law has a long and difficult road to recovery.
"His mom was doing amazing,” Cheyenne Perez said. “She was making her life better. She was working seven days a week detailing cars. I know it's going to kill her not to be able to work.”
Daniel and Cheyenne are asking for prayers and community support.
"I know she would appreciate that,” Perez said. “Anytime she's always gotten help, she's always appreciated it.”
