Logan County deputies arrested Jerry Maguffee, 90, and Kevin Maguffee, 62, at their north Edmond home on Wednesday for a kidnapping charge.
Prosecutors charged the pair, who are father and son, with kidnapping on Tuesday for allegedly restraining a female relative who has dementia.
“In this investigation, we had found that the victim was tied with her feet and hands with duct tape,” Logan County Undersheriff Troy Dykes said. “And our top priority was to work together with the (Oklahoma) Department of Human Services and our deputies to make sure the victim was safe.”
On May 2, deputies checked on the female relative after a doctor’s office called 911 to say she was restrained. According to the arrest warrant, Jerry had told the doctor’s office they had duct taped her arms and legs.
According to the probable cause affidavit, when deputies arrived, Jerry admitted the victim was tied up and on the floor of the living room.
Sgt. Kaitlin Long wrote in the affidavit that she witnessed Kevin “dragging the female across the living room floor.” The victim’s pants were soaked with urine, she wrote. Deputies and an ambulance crew cleaned, clothed, and transported the victim to a hospital for treatment.
The victim had visible bruises on her ankles and wrists after the duct tape was removed, according to the affidavit.
A few days later, deputies returned to question the Maguffees. Both said the victim had a pattern of running away, removing her clothing in public and jumping into other people’s cars with passengers inside.
“Unfortunately, some bad choices were made,” Dykes said. “Their intent, in their mind, they thought they were helping. However, the actions that they took were violations of state law.”
Deputies booked Jerry and Kevin Maguffee into the Logan County Detention Center in Guthrie with $15,000 bonds.
