The Tulsa Drillers are o”fish”ally changing their name for one weekend only this summer.
The change has to do with News On 6 anchor Tess Maune's favorite summertime hobbies – noodling.
The Tulsa Drillers will go by the Tulsa Noodlers when they take on the Wichita Wind Surge August 12-15.
The team unveiled a new uniform that pays homage to noodling! It’s dark royal blue and lime green with a #BiteBack logo showing a catfish with someone's feet hanging its mouth.
Noodling is when you catch, or try to catch, a catfish using just your hand. It's only legal in 16 states and Oklahoma is one of them. In fact, some consider Oklahoma the noodling capital of the world.
So the Drillers wanted to pay tribute to the long-standing tradition of Okie noodling with their temporary “alternate identity.”
The Tulsa Noodlers want to see pictures of fans noodling, to share on their videoboards. Anyone can share their pictures to the Drillers social media accounts using #BiteBack. That will also enter fans to win tickets for that weekend.
The idea has been such a hit, almost all of the Tulsa Noodlers merchandise sold out in less than 24 hours. Tulsa Drillers Vice President of Marketing said they are reordering everything to restock.
The team has asked Tess Maune to throw out the first pitch for one of the games. News On 6 will share an update as soon as the exact date is set.
Tess and her husband are also planning to take Hornsby, the mascot, noodling in a few weeks, along with a few others in the Drillers organization, and yes, our cameras will be there.
