Drivers may soon see more utility task vehicles on the streets after a new law allows them to be registered for the road.
In the last two weeks, tag agencies across Oklahoma have registered more than 500 UTVs.
There are requirements to make a UTV street legal, and if you are looking for a new one, you may have to wait a few months.
Wayne and Denise Marsh of Sapulpa said they are looking for a ride that is safe and convenient.
"It feels like my brand-new pickup,” said Wayne Marsh while sitting in a UTV at Tulsa Powersports. “It's just wonderful, and it looks nice. And when you go down the road, people are going to be saying, 'Hey, that's what I want.'"
House Bill 2382 signed into law in April allows certain UTVs to be driven on the streets.
Paul Hatton with Tulsa Powersports told News On 6 the new law is a "game-changer," and his business has been getting ready.
"Typically, when a UTV comes in, it's missing a few parts on it that are going to make it street legal,” explained Hatton. “So, to make it street legal, you're going to have to have turn signals, and you've got to have a horn, and you've got to have mirrors on it, so they're just kind of minor things, but they're all accessories that you can purchase and just add those on after the fact when the unit gets here.”
The Oklahoma Tax Commission told News On 6 more than 500 street-legal UTVs have been registered across the state since July 7, which is when the commission started processing applications.
The Sand Springs Tag Agency said it has had more than a dozen registered.
Title clerk, Nichole Avey, said it is a simple process: Bring an Oklahoma driver's license and insurance, fill out an affidavit, pay for a license plate and leave with everything you need.
When News On 6 asked Avey why she believes there is such an interest, Avey explained, "If you live out in the country like I do, if you want to go from just your land to the gas station or go fishing, don't jump in your truck to go do it. Get in your UTV and your RZR or whatever and go to the lake."
