Rick Dickson is staying on at his alma mater, to lead the athletic department at the University of Tulsa.
Dickson could have called it a career as an athletic director for the University of Tulsa, but for him, leading the athletic program for the next three years was an easy decision.
Sometimes the athletic director position can be a thankless job, especially if the programs don't excel. That hasn't been an issue for the Golden Hurricane and Dickson since returning to his alma mater last year as interim AD.
TU competed in six conference championships, winning three: men's and women's cross country and women's golf.
"The smallest FBS university in the country and it’s not a close race,” Dickson said. “We have kind of won that race hands down, has always fought and performed and succeeded well above its weight.”
Dickson’s choice to stay at the University of Tulsa came down to two decisions: a sense of duty and family.
"Those things weigh heavily and really, as an alum and letter winner and somebody that got to launch their career here, that indebtedness starts with them," said Dickson.
Dickson’s deal has him lined up to lead Golden Hurricane athletics for three years, but he can opt out at any given point. With the landscape of universities shifting to other conferences, Dickson is keeping tabs on what’s next for TU.
"I've been in that position that they are in right now, where all of a sudden everything they thought was stable and assumed is all of a sudden," said Dickson.
