Broken Arrow band students are celebrating the big victory of winning the Super Regional Championship for Bands of America.
Walking out on the field in St. Louis is a moment Broken Arrow senior Kadence Davis said she will never forget. “I just felt my stomach tighten up and then he said ready go and we got onto the field and it was just like the best feeling ever like okay here we go we’re going to perform our best show ever," Davis said.
Just getting to the Bands of America competition in St. Louis wasn't easy. “We went overnight after half time at a football game and we drove all through the night. Got there at 3:30 in the morning and then slept the rest of the night in a hotel," Jessica Barnes said.
Barnes is in color guard and said the 11 minute show is the result of months of hard work. “We were at the super regional in St. Louis. That’s 60 plus bands from about 15 different states converging on one site to go through a two day preliminary contest and then the top 14 bands advance to finals,” Darrin Davis said.
Davis is the Director of Bands at Broken Arrow High School and said BA has been participating in this competition since 1994, with an exception for 2020. He said this win was emotional for the student and staff.
“It’s intimidating, but you just have to trust what you know. I mean you can’t control how the other bands march, but you can control how you perform. So you just do what you know how to do and hope for the best," said Barnes.
Marching season isn’t over just yet. Broken Arrow will compete against another one hundred bands at the Grand National Championships in Indianapolis in two weeks.
