Executions are on hold for death row inmate John Grant who was scheduled to be put to death Thursday and Julius Jones.
The US Supreme Court could overturn the federal court ruling and move forward with John Grant's execution Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m.
The US Court of Appeals put Grant and Julius Jones' executions on hold.
Three other inmates who are also part of the appeal have not been granted stays of execution.
The Oklahoma Attorney General's office is now asking the US Supreme Court to overturn the stay in hopes that quote:
"Justice can finally be served for the people of Oklahoma, including the families of the victims of these horrific crimes."
The attorneys for the inmates have long fought for them to be reinstated on a lawsuit challenging the states three drug cocktail, that stemmed from two botched lethal injections in 2015.
Lead attorney Dale Baich says while the stay was temporary victory, they still have a long way to go.
The three other inmates who were not granted a stay are expected to be executed before the trial against the three-drug cocktail begins in February.
Baich says they'll have to work out the details of what this stay order means for them.
