Pottawatomie Co. Deputy On Road To Recovery After Being Shot 7 Times On Friday

The Pottawatomie County deputy shot seven times on Friday is on the road to recovery. 

His GoFundMe page details his journey so far. 

Police said Braedon Chesser shot the deputy during a domestic disturbance call. 

Pottawatomie County Sheriff Michael Booth said even from a hospital bed, all deputy Garey Knoles did was worry about his brothers and sisters in blue.

"He's been concerned about everybody else, the deputies. He didn't want anybody else to be hurt or injured," Booth said in an interview on Saturday.

Knoles was shot seven times on Friday when he responded to a domestic call in Bethel Acres and he's now working to heal one step at a time. 

OSBI said Chesser opened fire on the deputy and initiated a nearly nine-hour manhunt for the former Marine. Much of that time was spent by law enforcement's efforts to get safely onto the property that had what looks like an underground storm shelter or bunker with a tree stand structure nearby.

"We're there to help. We know things can be tragic in just a matter of minutes or seconds to get there, deescalate the situation," said Booth.

Knoles was airlifted to OU Medical Center after he was shot and he had surgery on Friday. 

A GoFundMe was set up to help with those medical expenses. 

The page also shared an update on the deputy's status on Sunday. It said he tried to take a step sideways but passed out from the pain and will have to rehab in a facility rather than at home.

"I know he's medicated, shot seven times. It's kind of difficult to think he would be in those such good spirits," Booth said. "We'll just keep on doing what we got to do. We're a pretty tight family at the sheriff's office and we have a great law enforcement family."

Investigators found Chesser and his estranged wife, Sarah Chesser, dead on the property. Sarah Chesser was inside the home and Braedon Chesser was found about 100 yards behind the home in the woods, law officers said. 

Court records show Sarah Chesser filed divorce papers at the end of September.
