Former College Football Player Identified As Deadly Shooting Victim At NW OKC Apartment Complex

Oklahoma City police are investigating a deadly shooting involving a former college football player.

Police said Nigel Brannon, 21, was shot multiple times on Monday at a northwest Oklahoma City apartment complex.

The accused shooter reportedly stayed at the scene and told officers conflicting stories about the shooting.

People gathered at the River Chase Apartments near NW 122nd Street and N Pennsylvania Avenue in disbelief. They stood outside the tape that marked the deadly shooting scene.

Police said Brannon died inside a car in the parking lot. The other man in the car was identified as 22-year-old Paris Tolver.

“There were two individuals inside a vehicle,” said Oklahoma City police Sgt. Dillon Quirk. “They were conducting an illegal activity, and at some point, it resulted in one male being shot by another.”  

The deadly shooting was located only miles from where Brannon went to high school and made a name for himself on the football field.

His former coach Rashaun Woods said his heart dropped when he heard the tragic news.

“He was an upstanding young man at John Marshall,” said Rashaun Woods, Brannon's high school football coach. “I just didn’t see this happening to a guy like him or even going down this path.”

Woods said the lineman had so much potential.

The John Marshall High School graduate played for the University of Memphis and Austin Peay State University. He was suspended from the Austin Peay football team in July following charges of aggravated assault.

“This is kind of the not-so-fortunate side of getting close and getting to know these guys, and then seeing something like this happen,” Woods said.

Woods said he does not know all the details surrounding Brannon's death but hopes other young people can learn from the tragedy.

“If you’re going down that road to rethink your options and make a life change,” said Woods. 

Police arrested Tolver at the scene. He was booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center on one complaint of first-degree murder.
