A Tulsa County man is facing 160 counts of animal cruelty after deputies say they found more than 100 animals living in tiny cages without food or water at his home.
The Tulsa County Sheriff's Office says it's hard to tell from the outside what was going on at the property near Collinsville. They say what they found inside the home was shocking.
Deputies and the Humane Society of Tulsa seized 128 live chickens, 14 dead chickens, a pigeon, a donkey, 15 live goats, and one dead goat.
President of the Humane Society of Tulsa Gina Gardner, and Casey Roebuck with the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office say the conditions inside the home, where many of the more than 100 chickens were found, were unlivable.
"There is no doubt that more animals would have died if we had not intervened if the sheriff had not intervened," Gardner said.
Roebuck described swarms of flies - and air choked with the smell of rotting animals.
"These are not conditions that it is legal to keep a living creature in," Roebuck said. “Inside the house when the door opens you can smell the odor of animal feces and there was even an odor of death.”
Deputies arrested Samual Smith on the spot and took him to the Tulsa County Jail.
The animals were rushed to the Humane Society of Tulsa for treatment.
Gardner says the survivors are making huge strides in their recovery.
"They were really ravenous. They were so thirsty and hungry," she said.
“Today it’s been a lot better and more rewarding to see how well they’re coming along just in a day.”
