The owners of a Bartlesville candle shop are giving back this month after a life-changing event.

The couple said they pick a cause each month to donate to, and they said this month, the American Heart Association was an easy choice.

For Crafty Candle Shoppe co-owners Erin and Clifford Taylor, heart issues hit close to home.

“My amazing husband had a stroke two years ago, and the American Heart Association is also the leading authority on stroke prevention, so we want to make sure we do everything we can possibly do, to raise funds and awareness for them,” said Erin Taylor, co-owner of Crafty Candle Shoppe

Clifford had a widow-maker stroke on January 31, 2020.

He says Erin’s quick thinking saved his life.

“I’m screaming at her, but I’m not. In my mind, I’m going, ‘I’m not right,’” said Clifford. “And all I could get out was not and right kind of garbled. She understood that being the wonderful woman she is and intuitive. She said, ‘can you put your shoes on? We are going to go to the hospital.”’

Clifford is still recovering but is thankful for the progress he has made.

“I can walk and talk and breathe and eat and all of that, but I discovered that my left leg doesn’t come up as high when I try to pick it up, as it used to,” said Clifford. “Is that bad? Yeah it’s bad, but to me, I can still lift my leg, I’m good, I am still on this side of the grass, I’m good.”

He says he is thankful for groups like the American Heart Association which help educate people on the signs of a stroke and how to prevent them.

“Learning about strokes and how to recognize them matters,” said Clifford. “From a recipient.”

Every month, Erin and Clifford Taylor create a “Candle for a Cause.”

The proceeds from the candle and several other items are given to the organization of their choice.

Erin says trying to help others through their work is her ultimate goal.

“Trying to make the world a little better than we found it, ” Erin said.

If you don’t live in Bartlesville, but want to buy a candle or donate to the cause, you can order one online on their website.
