A $20-million expansion that'll add 50 new jobs is underway at the Milo's tea plant near Owasso.
Huge white barriers protect two Milo's tea filling and packing lines from the busy worksite of the expansion inside the plant.
The plant only opened a year and a half ago, but Operations Manager Kejuan Jimmerson said the company is growing fast - and that growth is leading to more jobs.
"One of the things that’s super exciting is the jobs that we’ll make available here in the city of Tulsa," he said. “We probably employed about 50 people about to start out with, and we’ll almost triple our staff in a two-year period.”
Milo's is the biggest seller of brewed sweet tea in the nation. When the Tulsa plant first opened in 2020, it could produce 94,000 gallons of tea each day, but even that isn't enough.
Tea sales are rising - and the machines on the plant's two lines have been filling bottles as fast as they can brew them. Jimmerson said with a summer boom right around the corner - they won't be fast enough.
“We’ll need the capacity by June. Summertime is absolutely extraordinary for us in the tea business. So it has to be done by June," he said.
The 50 new employees will be manning two new production lines filling 3,100 square feet.
Even with the extra man and machine power - Jimmerson said there's a possibility the plant could expand again in the future.
