The Mayor of Sperry said there's hope for downtown revitalization after a crash and fire damaged an old building.

Debris is still smoldering from the abandoned building that used to house the Ferrier College dorms in the 70s.

Police said a driver crashed into the building in the middle of the night and later died.

"When it was booming, we had 5 cafes, barbershop, dominos club, all of those things that are traditional with small towns. And we're trying to see that again," said Sperry Mayor Debra Burch.

Police have not released the name of the driver.
