A German Shepherd found on the brink of death last month has a new lease on life thanks to his original owner’s family.

Oklahoma County deputies found the owner dead inside his Luther home. The family’s dog, Gunner, was trapped inside a kennel.

Gunner spent the last month at Woodlake Animal Hospital in northwest Oklahoma City. In that time, hospital staff said they saw an incredible change in Gunner’s fight to live.

“You could tell he was so sad,” said Misty Wilson, Woodlake Animal Hospital. “His tail wouldn’t wag. He wouldn’t get up.”

His owner died at home. Gunner was left outside to survive on little food and rainwater.

“It’s rough,” Wilson said. “It’s hard when you take those dogs, and they’re broken and then hope. You know, you hope they do great.”

Wilson said Gunner gained more than 30 pounds in their care, and his medical conditions were treated.

“We have clients that would stop by, and they would hug him and give him treats,” said Wilson. “Just seeing him get up and want to live.”

Wilson knew it was time for Gunner to go to his “fur”-ever home.

Gunner's deceased owner's niece picked him up this week. She left an emotional message before taking Gunner to his new home in Texas.

“I just want to say, ‘Thank you,’ to everybody that donated to Gunner’s case,” said the new owner. “Because of you, I’m able to bring my uncle’s dog home, and I’ll take very good care of him.”

The staff at Woodlake said they have no doubt Gunner left in good hands and will live his life surrounded by love.

“I’m excited for his next chapter,” Wilson said.

However, it will not come without a few challenges.

“There’s a lot of anxiety that Gunner’s going to carry for a long time,” Wilson said. “But I wish him well, and I hope he’s going to do good.”

Gunner’s new family has become close to the staff at Woodlake and plan to stay in contact by sending videos.
