Thirty-four beagles rescued from an Oklahoma flea and tick prevention research facility got new homes on Wednesday.

Beagle Freedom Project Director, Wendy Wood, said the group has rescued thousands of beagles from testing labs across the country. She said they mostly rescue beagles but also help other dogs, cats, llamas, alpacas, pigs, and more.

Within minutes, many of the dogs went from scared in a cage, to running around happy and free.

“They just don’t realize how improved their life will be,” Woods said. “They will live in a home, they have never lived in home. They lived outside and they will have humans that care for them they will get to live their best dog life.”

One couple came to Broken Arrow all the way from Padre Island, Texas. They said the 11-hour trip is worth it when it comes to getting a new family member.

“It’s just the right thing to do and who is more deserving of love than one of these beagles that have suffered,” Kathy Reynar said.

Michelle Reno-Bueno and her friend are taking four of the beagles to Dallas, where each dog has a new family waiting for them.

“My friend and I do transports regularly, once a month we take a van to Minnesota. We’ve gone cross-country several times. It’s a thing we enjoy doing,” Reno-Bueno said.

Wood said the beagles have a long road ahead of them, but today is the first day of the rest of their lives.

The group makes stops all over the country, if you’re interested in adopting or fostering rescued beagles in the future. More information can be found by clicking here.
