The Trinity Baptist church received extensive damage and it’s unrecognizable. There’s reminisce of the stained-glass windows along with bricks from the building scattered on the ground.
The McCurtain community woke up to downed power lines and debris covering their neighborhoods.
“I really was just caught off guard with how severe and destructive it was as I drove in last night,” Cody McDaniel said.
First responders assessed the damage in the area on Saturday.
They said there was one fatality in the county and a few minor injuries, but the property loss was widespread.
“Along with major residential (damage) we also had some businesses and a church damaged,” said John Martin, Idabel police chief said.
That church referenced is the Trinity Baptist Church.
“When I saw that our worship center had been leveled and also our new building project completely in a pile of rubble, I don't think there was really any words for it, I couldn't believe that was the extent of it,” Pastor Don Myer said.
The church's current sanctuary could hold around 100 people, the new building would've held more than double that. Pastor Myer said the church was going to vote on moving forward with the plans Sunday.
“Our hopeful goal was to be in and having our service next year at this time,” Myers said.
Myers said his faith never buckled as he looked at the devastation. He remains hopeful.
“Today is the day of hope. God is faithful and he will show his loving-kindness day after day, after day so we'll discover it every day,” Myer said.
Pastor Myer said he doesn't need a building to have a service. They will have a service in their parking lot Sunday, November 5th at 11 a.m.
