National Weather Service Confirms 3 Tornadoes In Choctaw, LeFlore Counties

The National Weather Service (NWS) has confirmed that three tornadoes struck Choctaw and LeFlore counties on Friday.

According to the NWS, an EF-1 twister touched down on the southeast side of Heavener in LeFlore County on Friday afternoon. The NWS says the tornado developed just south of Highway 128, damaging several homes and destroying some outbuildings before it moved northeast into a mountainous and heavily wooded area. The NWS says the twister snapped and uprooted several trees on Middle Mountain and Poteau Mountain before it dissipated near Cowskin Ridge.

According to the NWS, the tornado, which was about 900 yards wide, had a path that extended for about 6.5 miles. The NWS says the twister lasted for about eight minutes, between 6:33 p.m. and 6:41 p.m., and produced winds between 100 and 110 MPH. Nobody was injured or killed as a result of the twister.

The second tornado surveyed by the NWS also touched down in LeFlore County on Friday afternoon.

According to the NWS, another EF-1 twister touched down in a heavily wooded area in northeastern McCurtain County and moved northeast into southern LeFlore County.

The NWS says the tornado snapped and uprooted several trees and damaged some homes and outbuildings as it moved into LeFlore County.

Officials from the NWS said the tornado lasted for about 12 minutes, from 5:54 p.m. to 6:06 p.m., and produced winds between 100 and 110 MPH. The tornado, which was about 1,600 yards wide extended for about 10.2 Miles.

The NWS says a third tornado touched down on Friday in Choctaw County. The twister developed in Lamar County, Texas, and produced EF-3 damage at several locations north of Paris, Texas, before crossing the Red River into Choctaw County as an EF-2, according to the NWS.

Officials say the twisters, which produced winds between 100 and 110 MPH, damaged numerous homes and destroyed outbuildings as it continued northeast across much of Choctaw County.

The NWS said the tornado, which was 1,700 feet wide, extended for about 18.8 miles and lasted about 26 minutes.

One person was injured in the EF-2 twister.
