A retired police officer intervened on Monday during an armed robbery at a CVS store on the northwest side of the city.

The robbery suspect was taken into custody after allegedly opening fire inside the store and at Oklahoma City police officers.

The man’s violent crime spree came to an end after he crashed during a pursuit near Midtown.

A quiet morning after Christmas took a frightening turn at the CVS store near Northwest 23rd and Classen Boulevard.

“It was shortly before 8 a.m. this morning when there was an armed robbery that took place at the CVS,” Capt. Valerie Littlejohn with the Oklahoma City Police Department said.

Police said the suspect assaulted a store employee during the hold-up.

At the same time, a retired police officer, who was on the way to a security job, walked into the store.

“That retired officer and the suspect did get into a physical altercation and during that time the suspect was able to run out of the store,” Littlejohn said.

However, not before allegedly firing shots inside the store and taking the retired officer's gun.

“When he was leaving the store, an officer was arriving on scene,” Littlejohn said. “That suspect fired shots at the officer and was able to get into a vehicle and drove off.”

Police said the man first drove north on Classen Boulevard before turning around driving in the opposite direction with the officer behind him.

“Officers pursued the suspect until the suspect crashed at Northwest 14th and Classen,” Littlejohn said.

Even then, the suspect attempted to out-run the law on foot.

The injured man did not get far before he was taken into custody and to the hospital to be checked for injuries.

The CVS employee was also transported to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect’s name will be released on Tuesday, according to police officials.
