The Moore Police Department is giving citizens a chance to learn what it's like to be a police officer.

David Dickinson is a Moore Police Department Community Service Officer, and he says this is a great way to learn.

"It's a way for them to see their police officers and what they do."

The academy is eight weeks long and attendees meet every other Wednesday from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

"We have a firearms simulator that the students can participate in, and we get to go and drive cars and things that citizens can participate in," said Dickinson.

Participants get to know their local law enforcement in a unique way.

"A lot of the officers that do this and volunteer their time let their personalities out and we're people just like everybody else, basically this is what you are paying for," said Dickinson.

Participants must be 21 to sign up. There is a simple application and a background check. The course is completely free.

"We'll set it up in the parking lot out here outside of the police department set up some scenarios walk them through give them a little bit of training," said Dickinson.

Part of their mission is to recruit volunteers.

"It just goes back to this is what we do and this is something behind the scenes that nobody ever sees," said Dickinson.
