The history of the barber shop quartet started right here in Oklahoma and is still going strong today.
“Barber shop harmony society started in Tulsa in 1938,” said Mark Winn C-Director of Vocal Sounds of Oklahoma.
Oklahoma City’s chapter was started later that year, and today the popular singing style is heard all over the world.
“The society has chapters worldwide, matter of fact we have quartet champions that are from different countries,” said Winn.
The Oklahoma City chapter has about 35 members known as Vocal sounds of Oklahoma. They rehearse every Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 9 at Cherokee Hills Church of Christ and welcome music lovers to come listen or join in.
“If it’s carry a tune in the shower and your ear can start hearing what’s around you as far as the part is concerned, yeah, you can do this,” said Winn.
They perform as the traditional four-part quartet but also as a chorus and are available for any occasion, including a News 9 surprise for Chief Meteorologist David Payne.
They are not affiliated with any particular church or denomination. For more information about the chapter visit their website www.vocalsoundsok.org
