A tornado hit Shawnee Sunday night, tearing down houses and scattering peoples’ belongings.
Neighbors said they knew the storm was bad, but Monday morning when the sun came up, they were able to get a better picture of the devastation.
“His little shed he built that and it never even pulled a piece of metal loose, so I told him next time I have something built I’m going to have him build it,” Jody Davis said.
With family and friends helping, Davis is picking up the pieces from Sunday's night tornado.
His shop is completely leveled.
“There's some stuff we had for a long time, and it was destroyed,” Davis said.
The windows are busted and there’s a huge hole coming out of his roof.
“This is the living room, and the kitchen is right behind it and there's two bedrooms on this end of the house. They're intact, there's nothing wrong,” Davis said.
Pottawatomie County Emergency Management says there are more than 45 structures and homes with damage like Davis’.
“So, what we're seeing today is anything from tree damage to fence damage and we've seen homes totally destroyed,” Shannon Schultz said.
“Here we are in our senior years in something like this. It's just kind of heartbreaking,” Davis said.
The county emergency management says they have not received any reports of any injuries. Jody said that's what he's most thankful for. He rode out the storm in his storm shelter with six other members of his family.
“We've got chairs. We was just barely able to sit down but you're not in there for very long,” Davis said.
He says it might've been a tight squeeze, but he wouldn't have had it any other way.
“I was glad I got in there last night. I think it saved us,” Davis said.
The American Red Cross is in town helping folks get back on their feet. If you have damage and in need of services please call 1-800-Red-Cross. Please report that damage to www.damage.ok.gov
