Wednesday evening, dozens gathered outside of OU medicine to pray for an Oklahoma County deputy who continues to fight for his life.

Deputy Jeremy McCain was rushed to OU medicine after an accident Friday at Oklahoma Christian School, where he's a school resource officer. Nearly a week later, people from the school and others in the community have continued to show an outpouring of support.

The Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office Chaplain said Deputy McCain had a 1 percent chance to see Saturday morning. Several days after his accident, family, friends, and some who never knew him joined together here to pray as he continues to beat the odds.

"He has made it out of surgery but that still doesn't mean we're out of the woods," said Oklahoma County Sheriff Tommie Johnson III.

Deputy McCain is still in critical condition. The single dad hasn't regained consciousness since he accidently ran into a metal gate that night at Oklahoma Christian School. That gate pierced the deputy's squad car windshield, pinned him to his car and crushed parts of his body. His injuries were so severe, his heart stopped three times.

"The fact that we made it from the initial incident when they were saying there was no way," said Sheriff Johnson III. "We're still praying for our guy. Still asking him to keep fighting. Keep fighting the good fight."

Sheriff Johnson III said he can see for himself how loved the school resource officer is by the people he protects.

"I don't think anyone recognizes the impact of what they do on a day to day basis until things like this happen. Then you have from the high school to the middle school to the elementary to the administration to parents, who say he meant everything to us," said the Sheriff. “Now that his life is on the line everybody's here to have his back and kind of to protect him."

Community members came together and planned a vigil outside of the hospital where Deputy McCain still fights for his life. His brother, who was the Oklahoma Christian School school resource officer before Jeremy, shared how much the outpour of support means to his family as the Chaplin led dozens in prayer.

"The streets are lined up with units and families and the school, I just think, how can you not have hope with that," said Sheriff Johnson III. “These people are off work, on their own time. They don't have to be here but choose to be here and that's really special."

Sheriff Johnson also asks anyone who can to donate blood since blood donations played such a vital role in keeping Deputy McCain alive.
