OKC Animal Shelter Temporarily Closes: 130 Dogs Sick

The Oklahoma City Animal Shelter is closed for at least a week due to a rapidly spreading respiratory infection for dogs.

This infection has spread to 130 dogs in three days. Three dogs have died.

The shelter has sent samples to a lab in order to identify and treat the illness.

“The shelter closed to prevent the spread of the disease in the community and the death of hundreds of animals being housed at the shelter,” said Shelter Supervisor Jon Gary. “We want to protect as many animals as we can.”

The shelter will still take in dogs that are sick, injured, or pose a threat to the community.
