A new adaptive playground is in the works at the Center for Individuals with Physical Challenges. It's a place where all kids can play regardless of physical ability.
There will soon be an accessible playground right outside of the Hardesty Family Adaptive Sports Complex. The nearly $400,000 project has been two years in the making and is possible with help from community fundraising. On Thursday, The Center for Individuals with Physical Challenges broke ground.
"So, a traditional playground is often not accessible because it has woodchips or grass or gravel, which makes it hard to traverse. The playground equipment itself has steps to get up to, and people in wheelchairs or with limited mobility have difficulty climbing those stairs,” said Executive Director Wendi Fralick.
She said this playground will have ramp so children in wheelchairs or with mobility issues can play.
Instead of woodchips or gravel, the ground will be a rubber material called Pour and Play.
"The purpose is that all kids will be able to use this playground. So, if you have a family that has a child that may be in a wheelchair, then they have children who are not in wheelchairs, they're all able to play together in a play space,” Fralick said.
While it will be located at the Center, the playground will be open to anyone.
"We know the importance of a playground experience for youth, and we just want to make it possible for all youth to have that experience,” Fralick said.
She said the hope is to open by the end of May just in time for the summer.
