Oklahoma resident David Satre is preparing for the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon, an event Satre has been participating in the event since 2013.
Satre contracted polio, a virus affecting the nervous system, as a child, causing paralysis, although Satre said he did not let the disease get in the way of his fitness goals.
Instead, Satre said, it motivated him to keep pushing.
“I do not have a set routine, I train in the CrossFit gym or outside near Wheeler Park," Satre said.
Satre is an Oklahoma State University alum and was apart of the OSU wheelchair basketball program for four years.
Satre said he is bringing those skills to the push-rim racing event. In push-rim chairs, athletes use their whole upper body strength to keep them going.
Satre also said his goal is to beat his winning time every year. Satre currently holds the record for the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon in a push rim chair for 2 hours and 55 minutes, and that he hopes to one day compete in the Boston Marathon.
