100-Year-Old Bristow Farmer And WWII Veteran Honored At State Capitol

Even at 100 years old, Joe Ihle still works on his pecan farm, but on Wednesday his scenery changed to the Oklahoma state capitol, where he was recognized on the senate floor.

A 100-year-old pecan farmer and WWII veteran from Bristow was honored at the state capitol this week.

Even at 100 years old, Joe Ihle still works on his pecan farm, but on Wednesday his scenery changed to the Oklahoma state capitol, where he was recognized on the senate floor.

With a quick pace, Joe Ihle walked into the Senate chambers with his son and grandsons by his side.

Senator Todd Gollihare and Speaker Pro Tempore Kyle Hilbert took a moment to celebrate Joe.

“Joe Ihle was one of those uncommon men who led an extraordinary life and has bore witness to the past 100 years of Oklahoma,” Sen. Gollihare said.

This was Joe's first time at the capitol in about 10 years.

"Well it feels great to see the capitol and see all the improvements that have been made and see people and talk to them. I have old friends. But I could do without the rest of it,” Ihle said.

Ihle was given a Citation of Congratulations, put together with full sentences taken from News On 6’s story last October.

"In the southeast corner of Creek County, just a few miles outside Bristow, sits a paradise of pecan trees on Joe Ihle's land,” the citation reads, for example.

The crowd in the senate learned about Joe's life, including his service in WWII, and how he's dedicated the last 70 years to growing pecans.

"I don't need recognition,” Ihle said.

He said he was thankful to the legislature, and had fun enjoying the capitol with friends and family.

"He's been such a special father to me and he's got so many friends around this world, the community, and we just love him very much,” Joe’s son, Bill, said.

As for the farm, Joe said things are going alright, all things considered, but not without some challenges.

"We've had a lot of problems this year with the weather. It's been very unusual. And we've had a lot of problems with hogs,” he said.

After a busy day in the world of politics, he went back home to his pecans.
