People gathered at a local Episcopal church on Wednesday for the tolling of the bells in remembrance of the Uvalde, Texas, school shooting that happened one year ago.

Families said this past year has been challenging.

One survivor sat in the classroom next door as her 10-year-old brother Jose Flores was killed.

“I was excited to see him, I was ready to hug him. They said he didn't make it, and I started crying and I couldn't believe it happened,” Andrea Herrera, a Uvalde school shooting survivor, said.

The school is permanently shut down, but parents have been visiting for the first time this week as a criminal investigation continues.

Mementos continue to line the school streets, but a local library in Uvalde also receives items, letters, pictures, quilts and more.

The Oklahoma City’s National Memorial and Museum welcomed an archivist from Uvalde's library.

Tammie Sinclair is creating a memorial for the community in Texas.

Sinclair said she learned from Oklahoma how to build an archive for a trauma response.

"We are trying to make the collection meaningful for the families. So how can we take this community experience and bring it back to our community," Sinclair said.
