Spain won the Women's World Cup final on Sunday, beating England 1-0. England had an early chance to score but Spain settled into the match and eventually got the break through they needed when Mariona Caldentey sent the ball to Olga Carmona who scored from the left of the box.

Spain has joined the United States, Germany, Norway and Japan as champions. This is the third World Cup win for La Roja, having previously won the Under-20 and U-18 World Cups in the same year.

Coach Jorge Vilda had previously excluded all but three players who had protested his team environment, thus some view Spain's World Cup win as vindication of his actions.

Spain became the second country to have both a women's and men's World Cup title.
