National Grief Awareness Day is coming up on Aug. 30, which raises awareness on how people cope with loss and how others can support them.

Executive Director Erin Engelke with Calm Waters joined this week’s Mindful Monday to talk about what people should and shouldn't say to someone who is grieving.

What are some common phrases that people should stay away from using?

Engelke said to not say “at least” when trying to support someone who is grieving.

What can people say instead to offer support?

Instead, people should say, “I appreciate all you’ve shared with me. I’m here to listen” or ask how they’re feeling, according to Engelke.

What are the stages of grief?

Engelke said there are no stages of grief. She said Calm Waters has seen patients experience grief in a lot of different ways.
