A man springs into action by running to save an Oklahoma City family whose house was on fire near Southwest 29th Street and Independence Avenue.
An early morning fire nearly turned Jennifer Diaz's life upside down.
Diaz was outside on her porch when she started to smell smoke. She went inside to check on her kids and boyfriend.
“The last thing I seen was it just turned black. I was like man if this is what hell looks like I wouldn't want to be there at all,” Diaz said.
The fire even made its way to their driveway, charring outdoor furniture and melting away parts of their cars.
“If I would've waited a little bit longer the boys, they probably wouldn't have been here,” Diaz said.
Diaz was able to get everyone out of the house, but the flames had her and her kids surrounded in the backyard.
Otis Lewis was at a park nearby. He ran over when saw the smoke in the distance.
“I just kind of used my weight and dropped my weight to kind of pull it back and pull it down to break this fence open right here,” Lewis said.
Lewis was able to get the girls through the fence to safety.
“I didn't want to be that person that stands by and watches something happen. God had me here for a reason and I was meant to be here,” Lewis said.
“Thank you very much. If he wasn't here my mind would be going a thousand to nothing,” Diaz said.
Lewis said he's happy everyone made it out safe, but the work isn't over.
“Love others as much as you love yourself so I’m hoping that we can come together as a community and pitch in to help this family out,” Lewis said.
The school year just started. Diaz said she needs help getting her kids back on their feet. Click here if you would like to donate.
