Fans gear up ahead of Bedlam battle.
Two days before the final Bedlam game of the Big 12 era, fans are making sure they’re prepared. Bedlam Zone in Edmond knows well what the game means, and it sees many fans who are willing to show it. “I’ve been working here for 20 years,” says owner, Diane Smith. For Smith, every day is Bedlam.
Each year, the week leading up to the game makes that apparent. “Sometimes it’s a little taxing when people get mean to each other,” says Smith. “But most of the time it’s great and people are celebrating Bedlam week.”
The celebration was something new for the Sooner State transplant. “I’m originally from Canada and we don’t have anything like this where I’m from,” she says. “It’s a very unique thing and I’m glad to participate.”
For many fans, the joy of the occasion is equally matched by the realization that it won’t happen again – at least not anytime soon. “I think it’s bad for our Oklahoma economy,” Smith says of the tradition’s end. “Hopefully they’ll be able to figure it out and we’ll be able to play in the future.”
Until then fans will gear up and hope they leave this era behind with bragging rights in tow.
