The Navy will name an upcoming ship after an Oklahoma war hero.

Commander Ernest E. Evans was from Pawnee and led the USS Johnston against a much superior Japanese force at the Battle of Samar during World War II to protect a US task force. Ultimately, the Johnston was sunk and Evans and 186 others died.

Evans was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions becoming the first Native American to receive the distinction. The Navy has ordered an upcoming Arleigh Burke-class Destroyer to be named after Evans.

This will be the second shop named for him.
