Family and Children’s Services is spreading Christmas joy by the truckloads by making sure families who use its services have gifts under their trees.
Almost 200 bikes of different sizes were donated by the Burnstein Foundation for children.
In the spirit of giving, Family and Children’s Services says it wants to help families who are struggling.
The holidays are often referred to as the happiest time of the year
and Family and Children’s Services says it wants to help spread that happiness by giving nearly 200 bicycles to kids.
It’s Mary Porter’s 15th year delivering the bikes.
“That’s why I’m still here, because every year when the bike comes around and you give a bike, you see the excitement on the kid’s faces,” Porter said.
Porter says it always touches her heart to hear the stories from the lives she's had an impact on.
“They just think somebody still remembers us. All the things we’ve been through and they still remember us,” Porter said.
The event was organized with the help of Tulsa Bike Club and the bikes were hauled in by the moving company Two Men and A Truck.
“It’s actually one of the events that our employees look forward to the most,” Justin Langston said. So, they’ll ask us and we have a sign up list a mile long of employees who want to work these events every year.”
Families didn't have to pay anything for the bikes, but volunteer Renita Swedberg says their smiles are the only form of payment she would accept.
“It’s so exciting to be able just to show up at their door and deliver a bike,” Swedberg said.
