Sand Springs Police said a man is dead and another is in custody after a shooting outside of the QuikTrip near Highway 412 and Highway 97 on Tuesday.. The FBI has taken over the investigation because the suspect is a tribal citizen.
On Wednesday, police identified the suspect as Christin Kelley. The victim's name has not been released.
Details about what led up to the shooting have not been released, but people who visit the convenience store and gas station say they were stunned.
“I can’t believe it,” said Cody Fitzgerald, a frequent customer. “I was going to work, seeing all the cops, looked like you couldn’t get in so I just went to work and heard it was a shooting.”
Sand Springs Police say officers were called to the QuikTrip because of a disturbance early Monday morning. They found a man dead in the backseat of a car with gunshot wounds.
Police say the shooter stayed at the scene.
“As soon as our officers arrived, they found the suspect in the parking lot,” said Capt. Jody Fogelman, Sand Springs Police.
Officers say at some point, both men were in the backseat of the car. Investigators have not released any more information.
In a statement, QuikTrip said it is “working closely with law enforcement to assist with their ongoing investigation.” It adds that safety is a top priority.
This is the first homicide investigation in Sand Springs this year. Police say they had none in 2023.
