Ravens TE, Sooners Great Mark Andrews Assists With Midflight Medical Emergency

Former Oklahoma Sooners star and current Ravens tight end Mark Andrews is being credited with coming through in the clutch during a medical emergency aboard a flight on Thursday.

According to Andrew Springs on X, formerly Twitter, a woman was having a medical emergency during a flight from Baltimore to Phoenix. Doctors and nurses who were on board attended to the woman and had a hard time finding a pulse according to Springs.

He said that while they were attending to the woman Ravens tight-end and former Oklahoma player Mark Andrews stood up and asked if the woman was having issues with blood pressure. Andrews provided his diabetic testing kit to the medical professionals to use.

Springs said that eventually, the woman's heart rate returned to normal and paramedics met the plane as they landed.

Andrews gave all the credit to the nurse, doctor, and airline staff in a statement to the public.

“In addition to the fast-acting flight attendants, the real heroes are the nurse and doctor who also happened to be on the plane. Thankfully they were able to provide the woman the quick assistance she needed," said Andrews. 

Andrews has been a champion for raising diabetes awareness for many years and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 9. In July of 2024, Andrews visited Johns Hopkins which hosts Camp Charm City, a camp for children who have been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. 

In 2020, Andrews spoke with the University of Massachusetts about playing sports with the condition

“I adapted a mindset that this disease is a part of who I am, but it’s not going to define me and it’s never going to stop me in achieving my dreams. Type 1 diabetes is incredibly difficult, but I refuse to let it affect my job or my life in any way.”
