Toby Keith, an Oklahoma country music star, has died at the age of 62. The news came in overnight that Keith died after a three-year battle with stomach cancer.
"Toby Keith passed peacefully last night on February 5th, surrounded by his family. He fought his fight with grace and courage. Please respect the privacy of his family at this time," a message posted on Keith's social media pages said.
Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt directed that all American and Oklahoman flags be flown at half-staff on Tuesday as a sign of respect to Keith.
"A fellow Oklahoman, Toby Keith inspired love for the American attitude, appreciation for the strength of our country, and respect for the stars and stripes. His songs are often used to convey what it means to be an American, and his dedication to supporting our troops overseas continues to touch the hearts of many," said Stitt in his executive order.
The order continues until sunset on Wednesday, Feb. 7
Keith was born in Moore and his career spanned decades.
News On 6 recently aired a two-part special with Keith in what has now become one of his final interviews. He spoke about his battle and his decades-long career.
“Cancer is a roller coaster. So it's like, you just sit here and wait for it to go away. And it may not ever go away. If it goes into remission, it will still be in the back of your mind. You still have to do scans and stuff," Keith said.
When asked how Keith maneuvers through those dark times, he said it's his faith that he leans on.
"You have to have your faith. Thank God that I got it, too. You take it for granted on the days that things are good. And you lean on it when days are bad. And it's taught me to lean on a little more every day," Keith said.
Keith was diagnosed with stomach cancer back in 2021 and took a step back from performing while in treatment.
He later surprised fans with three concerts in Las Vegas last December and they sold out in seconds.
Keith has 42 top-ten hits, 32 number-one songs, and sold more than 40 million albums.
Keith leaves behind a wife, three children, and four grandchildren.
