A five-run fifth-inning propelled the No. 9/11 Oklahoma State softball team to an 8-0 run-rule win over Cal State Northridge in the season opener for both teams at Matador Diamond Thursday.
The Cowgirls got on the board immediately after the first two batters of the game, Tallen Edwards and Katie Lott, reached base safely and Edwards was driven in on a single by freshman Karli Godwin in her first collegiate at-bat.
OSU added two more in the fourth, thanks to an RBI single from Megan Bloodworth and a heads-up baserunning play from freshman Rosie Davis, who scored from third when Bloodworth was caught trying to steal second.
With runners on the corners and one out in the fifth, Scotland David scored from third when Matador catcher Makenzie San Pedro threw the ball into left field in an effort to pick the Cowgirl senior off. Claire Timm and Jilyen Poullard got on board to load the bases and Audrey Schneidmiller delivered the big blow with a bases-clearing triple to left-center. A sac fly by Haidyn Sokoloski brought Schneidmiller home to extend the OSU lead to 8-0.
Pitcher Ivy Rosenberry retired the Matadors in order in the bottom of the fifth to clinch the Cowgirl win.
Starter Lexi Kilfoyl picked up the win and she, freshman Katie Kutz and Rosenberry combined to limit CSUN to two hits in the contest. Kilfoyl was perfect in her two innings of work and Rosenberry struck out two of the three batters she faced. Making her collegiate debut, Kutz threw two scoreless innings.
OSU returns to action when it faces Loyola Marymount tomorrow in Los Angeles at 1 p.m. CT.
