The University of Tulsa has a new concussion center, the first interdisciplinary concussion center in Oklahoma that accepts patients free of charge.
The concussion center sees children and adults who have recently had a concussion or who are still experiencing symptoms post-concussion.
The Concussion Center is located in TU’s Mary K. Chapman Clinic for Communicative Disorders.
Its team includes professionals and graduate students who work together to treat each patient for what staff call a more thorough diagnosis.
They can support patients through their cognitive, physical, and mental needs.
Laura Wilson is one of the professors working at the clinic. She said she was interested in brain injuries and concussions.
Wilson said she wanted to provide community service and give students an idea of holistically caring for patients.
"We see a combination of individuals who have had sports-related injuries or perhaps have had motor vehicle collisions. So, we are open regardless to the cause of the injury. It’s really just for folks who need that additional support either acutely to return back to the school environment or work environment, or who have not quite gotten back to where they wanted to get to," Wilson said.
Wilson said the big goal is to provide education and resources to the community on how to support recovery best.
