A Tulsa nonprofit is accepting grant applications for families who are at immediate risk of being evicted.

Family Promise of Tulsa County said more families are facing eviction and homelessness because of inflation causing higher prices on everything, along with soaring rent costs.

The nonprofit said its “Future Begins at Home” program is critical for those in need. The program has two components: eviction prevention and shelter diversion.

What is eviction prevention?

Eviction prevention is for families already dealing with the eviction process.

Those who receive the grant will receive money for a one-time payment to prevent the loss of their home.

What is shelter diversion?

The shelter diversion program is similar, but the money is for restoring utilities or helping with move-in costs.

Executive Director Tina Massey says the organization gets a lot of calls from families who are a few hundred dollars short from meeting their bills.

She said the nonprofit also offers help for those who’ve just found a new place to live.

“If somebody has been evicted, and they have a new house and they have to come up with all this money, for up front, like the first month’s rent, deposit, you know, and then security deposit, last month’s rent. And it’s hard for people to come up with $1,500, $2,000, at the beginning when they’re still struggling and have just lost their home," Massey said.

Massey said the grant is a three-to-one match, meaning for every $1 received, three more will be donated.
