A popular cocktail has been given its own special day and it falls on February 22nd.
"It is National Margarita Day, every Mexican restaurant's dream," said Libby Billings, owner of Elote Cafe & Catering.
Her downtown Tulsa business is celebrating with $5 margaritas all day. "It is a good time to kick back," she added. "Who does not enjoy chips and salsa and a margarita, you know?"
The origin of the margarita cannot be traced back to just one person, but the cocktail is believed to have been around for more than 80 years. The cocktail is made up of the same three ingredients, but Billings said their signature recipe is what sets Elote apart.
"It is going to start with your 100% Agave tequila, your orange liqueur, and we make our own sweet and sour," she continued saying, "A lot of places will buy a bagged powder that you just add water to, but we use lemon juice, lime juice, simple syrup, and water."
The $5 National Margarita Day special is for Elote's classic margarita, but for an extra $1 customers can spice it up.
Billings said, "We have lots of different flavors like mango, coconut, spicy, strawberry, and hibiscus."
Elote Cafe & Catering is located at 514 S Boston Ave. and is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
"Downtown is just like everyone's neighborhood," said Billings. "I love that about being down here."
