Tulsa Animal Shelter is experiencing overcrowding like many other shelters. So it's come up with an incentive for nonprofits to try and alleviate some of that stress.
Tulsa Animal Shelter has partnered with Best Friends Animal Society to pay nonprofit organizations who help transfer dogs to other shelters for adoption.
The shelter currently has more than 200 medium sized, mixed breed dogs.
Any organization that qualifies and helps transport dogs could receive $100 for each dog or $150 for each dog that requires extensive documented medical care.
Sherri Carrier, the Tulsa Animal Welfare manager, said that overcrowding at the shelter could lead to disease for dogs and problems for the shelter itself.
"It kind of takes a team effort and more just to be able to take care of all these animals in the facility. So the more animals we can get out, the more lives we can save. And hopefully the facility is not as at risk for those potential hazards," Carrier said.
Best Friends Animal Society will provide up to $10,000 to nonprofits that help out. The incentive program starts Friday, March 1 and runs through March 17.
