A Coweta teenager is back home recovering after spending the last four months in different hospitals after a car crash. Cage Stidham’s family says he has a severe brain injury after being thrown from the truck he was driving last November.
Doctors told Sarah Kizzia her son, Cage, would not make it on the night he was sent to the emergency room. 110 days later, the family says he is finally home and getting better every day.
“He can continue getting back to his normal self,” said Kizzia. “Being able to be outside all the time or being able to go and not be stuck with mom by his side 24 hours a day.”
Cage suffered a severe brain injury after being thrown from the truck during a crash just five minutes from his house. Troopers say he was not wearing a seatbelt.
“The seatbelt may or may not have changed anything,” said Kizzia. “We know that he didn’t have it on, and he was ejected, so please, any age, any place you’re going, buckle up.”
Cage’s recovery led him to rehab facilities in Tulsa and Dallas, where he learned to use his arms and legs again. His mom has been right by his side every step of the way.
“I never left,” she said. “I put all of my effort into him. If he can continue to push and fight, we were going to fight with him.”
Cage is a Wagoner County emergency management volunteer. He has also helped coach football teams. From vigils to calls and texts to people dropping off food, Kizzia says the outpouring of support from the community has been encouraging.
While Cage is getting better, they know there is still work to do.
“We’ll get there,” said Kizzia. “It’s still going to be a long road, but we’ll get there.”
Cage will continue therapy a couple times a week in Tulsa. He is looking forward to the day he can get back to volunteering with the Wagoner County emergency management team.
